Speakeasy tells me I don't have a 2mbps connection, Airtel tells me I do, and what's more expects me to pay for it. Now what should I do?

Have you tried the download test within India ? or within Airtel's network ? Cause the 2mbps connection is probably only to Airtel's end and that's most probably the answer you'll get.

They don't run a proper DNS server in the first place - look ups routinely fail on sites like livejournal.com and mail.google.com, and I can't use OpenDNS because of its weird redirect / timeout behavior. I am not very happy.

Check the fine print. It will probably say that it's a "maximum" of 2 Mbps, not a sustained throughput. I remember reading it somewhere.

Speed indicated are only speed upto our ISP Node and are given on best effort bases as per TRAI guideline on Quality of Service for Broadband Service

I guess this is what they will quote when you complain.
