Vista does require more resources, so the slowdown is natural. You should upgrade your laptop and move back to vista. If you don't use the latest Aero user interface and stick with the traditional windows 98 gray look and feel you will free up a lot of resources. Vista isn't very scary, but it isn't perfect either. I am not a Microsoft fan, and so this coming from me is not tainted praise.
